Wilderness Medicine Instructor
Overview
Backcountry Medical Guides (BMG) is seeking passionate and experienced instructors to join our team! As a Wilderness Medicine Instructor, you’ll teach experiential, adventure-based medical courses tailored to outdoor disciplines like mountain biking, maritime, skiing, and trail running medicine.
BMG instructors serve as both educators and guides, creating immersive learning experiences that equip students with real-world emergency response skills. We believe that learning should be engaging, empowering, and fun, and we’re looking for instructors who bring expertise, energy, and a spirit of adventure to every course.
Responsibilities
Teaching & Course Delivery
Lead engaging lectures, hands-on skill stations, and realistic medical scenarios.
Adapt content to different learning styles while maintaining BMG's high instructional standards.
Make learning fun! Our courses blend education with camaraderie and adventure.
When teaching specialized courses (e.g., maritime, ski, or mountain bike medicine), integrate relevant activity-specific medical training.
Risk Management & Safety
Ensure the safety of students, staff, and participants by identifying and managing risks.
Be familiar with Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), venue layouts, trip logistics, and rescue contacts.
Conduct pre-course medical screenings, gear checks, and student fitness assessments.
Course Logistics & Operations
Help set up and break down classrooms, skill stations, and scenario locations.
Coordinate with co-instructors, logistics managers, and venue partners (State Parks, USFS, EMS agencies, etc.).
Maintain teaching equipment and ensure personal gear meets operational standards.
Post-Course Responsibilities
Research and follow up on student questions or evolving medical protocols.
Provide feedback and updates to improve course delivery and curriculum.
Mentor and help train new instructors to maintain BMG’s teaching excellence.
Qualifications
Required:
Current EMT-B, Paramedic, RN, PA, NP, MD, or DO certification/license in good standing
At least one year of experience in a wilderness, remote, or austere setting (e.g., ski patrol, fire/EMS, SAR, rural emergency care, flight EMS, international aid)
Strong communication and leadership skills—comfortable teaching, guiding, and working in dynamic outdoor environments
Preferred (But Not Required):
Prior teaching experience in wilderness medicine, outdoor education, or related fields
Technical experience relevant to our sport-specific programs (mountain biking, maritime, skiing, or trail running)
Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or Wilderness EMT (WEMT) certification
