Backcountry Medical Guides Scholarship Program 2023
Happy Holidays!
BMG is excited to announce our new scholarship campaign. We aim to offer 20% of our student body, or over $80,000 in scholarships in 2023 to increase accessibility to life-saving training. Our new scholarship initiative is guided by our mission To build community preparedness through inclusive education, science-based advocacy, and local accessibility.
BMG recognizes that our most significant assets are our community, staff, and alums, and we hope to engage these resources moving into the future. Our alums are a rich community of mariners, hikers, bikers, skiers, and adventure enthusiasts. We take pride that our alums come from all walks of life with varying levels of medical experience, backcountry experience, and involvement in their community. We wish to keep you all informed and connected to build a larger Backcountry Medical Community.
Big things are happening at Backcountry Medical Guides! We have recently started leasing an office and instructional space in Squalicum Harbor; we developed a new Outreach and Grant Writing position, hired five incredible instructors, and revamped our marketing campaign.
Previously we have offered need-based scholarships to those participants who have financial barriers to attending a BMG course. This year we are excited to provide a new type of scholarship, Identity-based, in addition, to need-based.
A summary of each of our Scholarship types:
Need-Based Scholarships are determined by participants' financial situation.
Identity-Based Scholarships awarded to underserved communities aim to minimize historical pressures/barriers within the medical and outdoor community and encourage participation in wilderness medicine courses. The Identity-Based scholarship includes participants from specific ethnic and cultural backgrounds (BIPOC), LGBTQ+ community members, those with unique challenges,, and more.
As a member of our community, we would love for you to help spread the word about our new scholarship opportunities. Please forward this blog to those who may be interested.
Detailed application information will be sent to each person who submits a request either by our website or by email to quinn@backcountrymedicalguides.org.
Scholarships are made possible through grants and generous donations from alums like you. Please consider donating to our Scholarship Fund this holiday season to help provide medical education to those in need.
Enjoy the Winter!!!,
BMG
